Chapter 20: A Tall American in a Cafe
'The week after meeting the unexpectedly kind-hearted Blair had been hardest on Mathilda. Despite finishing the last of their personal cannabis supply in Inverness, and not smoking anything since, Marcus had been suffering from continual bouts of paranoia (although it took much convincing from Tild for him to accept it for what is was). He heard conspiratorial chatter in service station bathrooms and saw the shadows of figures looming over the motorhome when they were parked in entirely secluded places.'

Chapter 21: A Fake Gun
'From instinct Gabe knew which areas to avoid in the day, and that venturing out alone at night was impossible. He’d also learnt that the circle of people he could trust in Trini had dwindled to a number he could count on one hand. It was time to leave. For good.'

Chapter 22: Dented Principles
'“When did this happen?” “Less than two hours ago. It’s a residential area slightly north of the capital, a stone’s throw from the most touristy part.” Mr O’Malley moved away from Jordana’s keyboard and rose to his full height. “This is apparently a low-crime area. They’re definitely not used to seeing this kind of thing.” “And the woman who sent the video, what does she know about it?” “Sweet F A,” the chief editor replied. Jordana hit play on the video once more. Although the camera phone footage was shaky and not of the best quality, the source had caught just enough to sufficiently capture the bizarre scene.'

Chapter 23: An Unfortunate Confession
'Zach awoke with a start in his hotel room in Cundinamarca, Colombia. His joints ached, the inside of his mouth had the texture of sandpaper, and it felt as though someone was lightly but persistently tapping nails into his temples. The room was dark, although a thin slither of light intruded via a skewed vertical blind. He rolled towards the centre of the bed and found that he was alone. He’d not fallen asleep in this condition; he distinctly remembered drifting off with a curvaceous local. Maria? Was that her name? No, Marcia. Marcia the Dance Instructor and History student… or was it Politics? Evidently she was gone now and he supposed it didn’t matter. Why she’d disappeared so abruptly, however, he had no clue.'

Chapter 24: A Pilfered Venue
'Olek watched Ivan talking with his betrothed. His son was tall and powerfully built with a full head of lustrous black hair. Handsome and zestful at thirty years of age, his were the fresh untroubled eyes of someone with all of the adventures and uncertainty ahead of him; not a man who’d already been there and done it. He recognised so much of his former self in that face. But was it all really forty-five years ago? Where had the years gone? “What do you think, Dad?” “Sorry?” Olek snapped out of his trance. “Miles away. About what?”'

Chapter 25: From Harm's Way to Stowed Away
'Gabe had learned three important things from his time with Renzo, the hulking Bajan policeman. First, he was a man of few words; second, he had very little time for most people including Gabe and third, he was absolutely besotted with his sister Cherelle. Of the three, however, the last observation had proved to be the most significant. It transpired that the pair had started dating a little less than a week after Cherelle had arrived on the island, and after such a short time together it seemed apparent (even to the boy) that the sullen-faced cop would gladly take a bullet for her. By mere association, this placed Gabe in equally safe hands.'

Chapter 26: A Seafaring Physician
'Cecelia’s hand was shaking violently as she held the receiver. It was difficult to distinguish if it was from fear or rage. “Dr Bryant is our consultant! We have a dialysis appointment and we were meeting with him today. How the hell is he not there?” “I’m really sorry, Mrs Dee, he just isn’t.” “You keep saying this. But I demand to know why. My baby is dying. Where the hell is my doctor?” “Mrs Dee, I apologise. But due to unforeseen circumstances—” “Don’t give me that,” Cee shouted down the phone. “Don’t give me unforeseen circumstances. I want answers. What’s the reason? He’d better be sick or dead.”'

Daizi has read and reviewed Covid Blues and Twos by Onia Fox for this episode, and she had plenty to say about it...
"...There are hints at an actual story line that could be a future prequel, or it could be just what it seems, a hint at something with no deeper meaning. I think the author is an intelligent writer, with a quick sense of humour and a strangely engaging pull, which got me through to the end when I was ready to give up at around the 30% mark. I’m glad I finished it though, as I fell a little in love with Brian. The stand out character in this book and the best judge of character too."
April has read and reviewed Ullandale by Liz Martinson. The write up on Amazon reads as follows, but what did April think of it?...
"Kate finds her dream job at an upmarket Scottish castle hotel, after silencing her doubts about the owner, the new Earl of Ullandale. Bitter experience has taught her to distrust the privileged elite. However, her career plans are compromised by Euan, the estate's good-looking factor. He seems to be everywhere, helpful and hardworking. But what is Euan's relationship with the late Earl's daughter? And where is the mysterious new Earl?"

Chapter 27: A Hit and Run in God's Waiting Room
'Olek had spent the last few days in a kind of surreal daze. Contemplating what might transpire beyond his own limited existence was not something he could conceive of. It was apparent that life would simply go on for the people that meant the most to him. Like being informed that although a great soiree would be taking place in your neighbourhood, unfortunately, your invitation had been rescinded and all the details of the imminent party were to remain a mystery. It was a devastating prospect. But ignorance is bliss, as they say, and there was comfort to be had in not knowing what one would be missing.'

Chapter 28: A Misread Message
'“I’m just saying, Tommy Boy. Two poxy gigs in… how many?” “Thirty-nine,” his manager responded without missing a beat. “There we go, Thirty-nine.” Zach smiled his pearly-white smile. “I’d say we’re doing all right.” Tom rolled his eyes. “You do realise you’ll basically be performing at Chicago and Newcastle for free?” “You keep trying to say that. But I’ve seen what that festival incident did to my record sales.” He studied his friend’s reaction; the man flinched as expected and Zach grinned. “Yeah, thought that little fact sailed by me, didn’t you? The old adage is right on the nose, eh? —No such thing as bad publicity.”'
