Chapter 1: A Friend Left Hanging
'As a clandestine entrepreneur (as Marcus would occasionally refer to himself), work was either a breeze or an all-out hustle. And no two days were the same. He’d long ago decided that to run a successful operation—and one with longevity—certain precautions needed to be adhered to. One rule he stuck to no matter what: never deal from home—the fewer people who knew his address the better. While this measure gave him a degree of comfort, it meant a great deal of planning, as well as regular commutes to London from his rented property in Chatham.'

Chapter 2: A Deserting Husband
'Cee knew the resentment she felt towards Jeremy was misplaced. She should have been mad at the company; they were the ones who’d summoned him to London. Given his circumstances he had every right to refuse, but what then? Risk losing their main source of income? Her anger stemmed from a source much deeper than this new development. It was a can of worms she’d been lingering over for a while but dared not open.'

Chapter 3: A Lost Voice
'"If it’s not here, the show isn’t going ahead. And I’m telling the driver to carry straight onto the next town.” “Zach,” Tom pleaded. He was exhibiting the familiar signs: the throbbing vein in his temple, the spasmodic twitch in his right eye; another breakdown seemed on the cards. “You can’t—”'

Chapter 4: An Abandoned Interview
'“I’m sorry, Madam. They’re not here.” “So you’re telling me I’ve travelled half-way around the world, jet-lagged, sleep-deprived, and Spirit Inferno are where exactly?” “All we know is that the gig was cancelled, and they’ve left the venue. I have no other details at this time.”'

Chapter 5: The Wrong Reporter
'Gabe wandered the backstreets of Prince's Town. The area was small and word travelled faster than a lightning bolt to those with open ears. A reporter was in the area searching for sources, compiling yet another story on the escalation of gang violence. This time they sought to highlight the extent of the atrocities and the connection to Venezuela. Gabe had duped three news correspondents in the past six months: one English, one American, and one Australian. He was baffled that these hapless outsiders cared at all about the inner workings of his home. His success rate was nothing to rave about; for the few he’d effectively deceived there were three times as many failures—shrewd journalists who saw straight through his tall tales and told him to take a hike.'

Chapter 6: The Kindness of a Stranger
'Oleksandr sat on the bench outside Grantley Adam’s airport with his iced Americano, which was now just lukewarm and light brown liquid. He despised airports and wanted to soak in every last second of sunshine before he was confined to the building for at least ninety minutes of miserable pre-flight purgatory. He drained the plastic cup. The last mouthful was weak and bitter. He stood up, venting a moderate sigh, and gave one of the lower pockets of his cargo shorts a firm pat to feel his passport. After extending the handle of his carry-on to its full height, he strolled towards the building.'

Chapter 7: A Last-Second Outbidding
'“There’s no one you can think of?” “No, Cuss.” Mathilda was brusque and distant. She’d been this way for days. It was a symptom of their self-imposed isolation. Being shut up inside should not have been such an ordeal; they’d lived this way voluntarily in the past, only opening their front door to food deliveries and occupying themselves with TV and video games for days on end. These were starkly different circumstances, and the notion of returning to normality had never posed such a threat.'

Chapter 8: A Disobedient Dealer
'“O.K., I’m sitting with my friend Faisal here, and he’s asking if you want the Lemon haze or something called the—” Zach heard Tom muttering unintelligibly away from the phone. “Something called OG Cush.” The Aussie thought on this for a moment. “Um. Go with the haze.” “O.K., fine, four um—ounces, did you say?” Zach could hear that Tom was flustered. “Make it six.” “Sorry, Faisal,” Zach heard his manager mumbling, “excuse me for a moment.”'

Chapter 9: A Hotelier in Hot Water
'This was not the call Gabe had been expecting. Since the moment Cherelle had reluctantly accepted the flight money, he’d been confident he was giving her a better life. It’d been a trying week; he’d gone to sleep hungry each night, in underpasses and shop doorways, desperate to save the cash he left and lacking the energy to hustle. Today he’d woken up smiling though, counting down the minutes before he could take the phone call at Sandro’s house. He was certain the person on the other end would sound so content and full of joy that it’d lift him from his own despondence.'

Chapter 10: A Half-Paid Debt
'Marcus ended the call, fighting a fierce impulse to vomit. It took him several minutes to overcome the trembling in his legs. Although his heartrate had resumed its normal pace, his stomach remained unsettled as he reread the article on his phone—the man wasn’t lying. Frantically, he’d started to gather stuffed bags of his belongings, running outside with them through the back door of the house. He had no time to defend his behaviour to Mathilda. She just stood by door watching him pass her, seemingly waiting for an explanation.'
